Psoriasis is a skin condition that can be caused due to “overactive immune system”. People suffering from the same can see symptoms like flaking, red, white or silvery patches of skin. In most cases, the treatment of psoriasis includes the use of steroid creams and oral medications. In severe cases of psoriasis, light therapy can also be recommended.

The Causes

The cause of psoriasis is not understood completely but a number of studies have shown that this can occur due to a number of factors. Some of the factors that can cause psoriasis are,

  • Genetical factors
  • Environmental factors like stress, skin injuries, infections
  • It can also occur due to the use of certain medications like lithium or quinidine
  • Can occur due to an overactive immune system

How to diagnose psoriasis?

The doctor would start the diagnosis by examining your skin, nails and hair. He/she would also like to see your medical history. The next stage will include a skin biopsy where a small sample of the skin is taken which is examined to know the type of psoriasis. This examination also helps to rule out any other skin disorders.

How to cure psoriasis permanently?

Psoriasis is often reoccurring and hence you can take help of some home remedies to prevent its occurrence. Though the symptoms are seen on the skin, psoriasis often starts inside your body in the immune system. While there is no permanent cure, patients can make use of certain treatments to ease the symptoms. Let us see what they are.

Dietary supplements

Taking of dietary supplements can help treat psoriasis from within. Some of the supplements you can take are vitamin D, fish oil, Oregon grape and so on. It is also important to have a word with your doctor before you start taking any of these.

Dry skin

If you have a dry skin, make sure it is well moisturized. You can use moisturizers or lotions that are good oil content and are 100% natural.

Do not use fragrances

A number of soaps or shampoos that are available over the counter are filled with perfumes and dyes. These can cause skin irritation. You need to avoid using such products and use only those that are made for sensitive skin.

Eat healthily

Diet plays an important role in human well-being. The same applies to psoriasis as well. You need to take foods that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Such foods help reduce inflammation. Olive oil too can be used for cooking and can also be applied externally.

Hot water can prove to be harmful for those suffering from psoriasis. Instead opt for a lukewarm bath to which you can add Epsom salt, some olive or mineral oils. This can help soothe the skin and prevents itching.

Stress and Alcohol

Psoriasis can also occur due to stress. You can start practising meditation and yoga to get rid of stress. Alcohol dries up the skin and hence it is better to avoid the same when you are suffering from psoriasis.

Follow the above-mentioned home remedies and stay away from the onset of psoriasis.
